A search warrant served Aug. 30 at a Hawaiian Beaches home turned up a considerable amount of drugs and an illegal firearm and ammunition, according to court documents filed by police.
Douglas W. Soares, 56, of Pahoa was charged with two counts of first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, possession of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony, felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, two counts of promoting a harmful drug, plus marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia.
Three of those charges, use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony and the two counts of first-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, are Class A felonies that carry a possible 20-year prison term upon conviction.
Documents state officers found 50.2 grams of cocaine; 5 grams of crystal methamphetamine, or ice; a gram of marijuana concentrate; 2.7 grams of marijuana; and a single 325 milligram hydrocodone/acetominophen pill of the type marketed as Vicodin at Soares’ South Puni Mauka Loop home.
Also found, according to police, was a Smith and Wesson .38 Special revolver with two rounds loaded, seven 9 mm rounds of ammunition and one round each of 7 mm and 30.06 ammunition.
Documents state Soares was previously convicted of 16 felony offenses.
According to documents, Soares admitted to police he is a drug dealer and user, and reportedly told officers he sells or fronts about an ounce of methamphetamine a day and picks up 3 ounces every two to three days.
During Soares’ initial court appearance Tuesday, Deputy Public Defender Isaac Ickes asked Hilo District Judge Bruce Larson to grant Soares court-supervised release without cash bail, with Deputy Prosecutor Lucas Burns objecting to the request.
Larson maintained Soares’ bail at $228,000 and ordered him to return today for a preliminary hearing.
Soares remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
